Aspirin should be avoided during pregnancy due to several problems. Unless you have medical conditions that necessitate taking aspirin as determined by your doctor, the risks tend to outweigh the benefits.
A low dose, such as baby aspirin, is sometimes recommended to pregnant women due to clotting disorders, preeclampsia, or multiple pregnancy losses. However, higher doses can cause different problems at different stages. High aspirin doses during the first trimester can lead to congenital defects or miscarriage. During the third trimester, high doses of aspirin can increase the risk of premature fetal heart blood vessel closure. It can also increase the risk of bleeding in the brain for premature babies. Your doctor will closely monitor you if you need to take aspirin during this time.
The FDA does not recommend the use of any NSAIDs (nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory drugs) after week 19 of pregnancy as their use may cause rare but serious kidney problems in unborn babies. This can also lead to low amniotic fluid levels and possible complications due to that.
If you need to take a pain reliever during pregnancy, talk to your doctor first. They may suggest another medicine first. If you are already taking aspirin under the guidance of your doctor, continue to do so as instructed. Feel free to ask your doctor if you have any concerns about an aspirin regimen.
