Have you heard the idea of sex getting labor started? Many people will swear that their last romp in the sack got labor started and the baby was born later that day or the next day. This is an interesting concept and there are several theories behind it, from orgasms stimulating the uterus to chemicals in semen causing changes. As of now, there isn’t any hard evidence that sex actually induces labor, so unfortunately this is still in the realm of urban legend. But it’s a fun urban legend…
Can An Orgasm Start Labor?
Although there is no research supporting this idea, we can all see why soon-to-be parents might entertain the idea of sex getting labor going. After all, sex got us all into this situation in the first place.
A few theories on how orgasm may lead to labor are-
- Semen may have an effect on the cervix, making it dilate.
- Sex triggering the release of oxytocin, thereby starting contractions.
- An orgasm stimulating the uterus into action.
Can I Try Using Sex To Start Labor?
As repeated above, there is no evidence to support that sex will actually cause labor. With that said, there is no harm in getting it on during normal pregnancy. Sex is safe up until your water breaks. After the water breaks, sex may lead to infection. Also, sex may be best avoided if you have vaginal bleeding or placenta praevia.
What Is The Best Sex Position To Start Labor?
There is no best sex position for labor currently. At the end of the third trimester, sex is much easier said than done. Experiment with positions to see what is easiest for both of you. Even if it doesn’t induce labor, you can still have plenty of fun with your partner!
Even if sex isn’t practical, there’s always foreplay and oral!
